This pigeon puppet was made for a collaborative film with two other animators as part of a University project. I began with the designs based on sketches and reference images, and drew up a to scale diagram. This became the basis for the armature (made of wire and lilliput). The feet were sculpted and then cast in silicon with lilliput claws to prove stability. The bulk of the puppet was made from soft blue foam, then covered in carefully cut layers of felt to simulate feathers. Some coloured, slightly metallic material was used on the neck to give the pigeon that stereotypical pigeon look. After adding final touches (such as painting the beak and claws) the puppet was ready to be tested and animated!
This snail puppet was made for the same project as the pigeon. I began the same way, creating a to scale diagram of the character and using this as a basis for the maquette (made of tinfoil and super sculpy, painted with acrylic). After this I made the armature. This was made of wire and milliput, and was definitely was of the simpler armatures! This was then covered in blue foam and coated with a base covering of latex (with a small amount of green pigment). I let this set over night and continued to apply and dry the latex until I had the desired effect. The shell was made from hard foam sculpted and covered in mod roc, then left to dry and painted with acrylic paint. After this the eyes and shell were covered in a layer of PVA to give them a shine.
The above puppet was made for an individual project about fables, and was based on victorian children and the poem Matilda. I began with the design that went through a few different versions, and used this to make a maquette from tinfoil and super sculpy. This was to half scale. From here I made the armature from wire and milliput, and added foam to the body to create some shape. The hands and face were sculpted in clay then cast in silicone to give them a fleshy appearance, this involved adding some pink and orange pigment. The dress is made from various fabrics, cardboard, and a pair of striped tights. As it is difficult to attach things to silicone I made a sort of wig from orange wool and attached with a bonnet that was pinned into the head itself.
This puppet was made for a project based around a bestiary. I began with the design and from this made an armature from wire and milliput. I ended up making the core of the head from tightly balled up newspaper in order to keep the weight down, as this was a large puppet. I used foam to cover the armature, and directly glued on orange and grey fur. The face was made from sculpy and the features 2D animated afterwards.
